Welcome to Charles Burrell Humanities School

Hello and welcome to Charles Burrell Humanities School.  My name is Cathy Spillane and I have been acting Headteacher at the school for the past year.  This is because Nancy Robinson, our former Headteacher is now the Executive Principal overseeing the work of both the High schools in Thetford. The role of the Executive Principal is to help both schools but also to bring about a new ‘Thetford Campus,’ an Academy that will comprise of two sites and a new vocational centre in the heart of the town.  We are working towards this goal with Rosemary Musker High School, Wymondham College, Easton College and West Suffolk College.

In the meantime Charles Burrell goes from strength to strength. We passed our latest Ofsted inspection in January 2009 and the inspectors recognised that we are continuing to improve and provide our young people with a good curriculum, good leadership and good care and guidance. Our exam results in the summer exceeded targets in a number of areas and we have in the last two years had an above average contextual value added score.  This is the measure that shows the progress pupils are making, ours make good progress in relation to their starting points when they enter the school.

We are proud of our achievements and particularly proud of gaining specialist status in 2008 becoming a Humanities school.  We choose this specialism as we think that communication and team work skills are essential for the twenty first century workplace.  This term we will open the new classrooms that we were able to build and refurbish with our specialist funding.  These are two new computer rooms, a new Drama room an improved graphics room and a Hair and Beauty suite.

All our pupils are wearing our new smart uniform with a blazer and tie and many parents and members of the local community have commented on how smart they look. We encourage our students to be confident and to learn for themselves. Many of them are involved in the student council or on pupil focus groups; their opinions are valued and listened to.
